Since almost ever, EL ROYCE plays a furious punk'n'roll, fueled by axe-wielding, drum-thumping, bass-pounding and throat-tearing. The secret of their special sauce? A larger than life sound mainly influenced by upper class melodic employees of the month (Bob Mould Sugar, Anti-Flag, Foo Fighters) with a bunch of old school bastards (AC/DC, Motorhead) and a pinch of pubescent seminal fluid (At The Drive In, Billy Talent).
Based in Nantes (France, west coast) this three-piece outfit brings together a Clermont-Ferrand-born exiled a couple of years in London (Delicate Awol) and two mates well-known in the local scene (Chears, Divine Furia, Fools, UZY…).
These guys know the score! For many years they've scoured many spots, from hundreds lousy bars to famous french venues (La Cigale-Paris, La Locomotive-Paris, Le Gibus Club-Paris, Le Rex Club-Paris, La Cité-Rennes, Les Transmusicales Off-Rennes, L’Olympic-Nantes, Le Fuzz'Yon-La Roche sur Yon…)
The story gently starts in 2002 with a first line-up and a DIY debut-demo "DIESEL" (8-tracks EP) in 2003, then a second attempt "DIRECT LIVE" (5-tracks EP) in 2004. Fortunately, that kind of "done dirt cheap" recordings are heavily offseted by huge live acts. As a trademark, the stage always been the favorite playground of the band.
In 2005, after few personnel changes EL ROYCE set some new attack plans. In summer, a 4-tracks EP is recorded at AudioCapsule studio with Chris Hogommat. Mixed in fall, this new CD is released in march 2006 and acclaimed by french indie press and radios. Armed and dangerous, the crew is now ready to take the stage and set the fire anywhere they go.
During all the year, the power trio work out some new bomb material. In the end of 2007, they go back to AudioCapsule with Chris "Magic" Hogommat for a long-play recording (13 tracks). This new CD album "WYSIWYG" will be released in fall of 2008.
RichErd Royce born in Nantes (West Coast, France). Steals its first guitar at 8, in a spanish "curios/souvenir" shop (fed up to queue in line of the cashier, his family gently walk away forgetting to pay). At the age of 14 he is offered a real guitar at christmas by a cousin.
He's fond of Classic Rock pionneers (Hendrix, AC/DC, Van Halen, Motorhead...) and their charismatic singers (Bon Scott, David Lee Roth, Lemmy...).
He quickly finds a way to electrify his classical guitar and manages to build his first amp with an old tape recorder and a shoe box. He learns by playing over The Exploited's "Troops Of Tomorrow" album, and encounters his first guitaristic feelings. By saving pocket money he eventually buys himself a guitar (a cover of the mythic Gibson Flying V, a tribute to Hendrix and James Hetfield). Later on comes his first amp, the famous Cube 60 Roland, soon followed by a Marshall cab.
At school he begins to play in some bands (NEIREX, ADADA) as a guitar player/singer. When he joins CHEARS as the lead singer it's big time with finely crafted prods, high priced studios, TV shows and mythic venues (La Cigale/Paris, Le Gibus Club/Paris, La Cité/Rennes, L'Olympic/Nantes, Germinal/Bourges...), outrageous looks and gigs all over the country, an army of fans with crazy parties, in the great Sleaze Hard Rock/Glam Hair Band tradition (cf. Motley Crue, LA Guns et consorts).
But every god time has to pay its toll. Even if the band has been approached by a some record companies (ie Barclay), four years after a good start the band split for mysterious reasons (after a bad encouter with the French Connection)(1992-1995)
But less than a few weeks later, a new project is born with the drummer (Jean-Luc) and the bass player (Steff), without chic or gloss. Based upon rock'n'roll fundamentals, this new band aims to mix punk energy and soul groove. by a lead guitarist (Pascal) the quatuor names himself DIVINE FURIA.
Since its first demo the band is looked by some talent scouts from the indy label back then (Patrick Mathé, Peter Murray). But the band doesn't pay attention due to some painfull line-up changes. In only a few months a new bass player (Eric) and a new drummer (Maël) enroll the band.
DIVINE FURIA gives head in many sought after venues (festival Transmusicales Off/Rennes, Tontons Flingueurs/Rennes...) and well-known stages (Parc des Oudairies/La Roche, L'Escall/Nantes, La Barakason/Rezé...) and in many times with famous bands like Mass Murderers, Welcome To Julian, Happy Drivers, Drive By Shooting... After 3 years full of events DIVINE FURIA gives up when Mael is acceptd at the Nancy's CMCN (Music Academy International) for a full year training.
A strong friendship has taken place between Richard and Maël. Thus, the drummer back from the M.A.I, the duo heads towards a new and darker, heavier musical project mixing electronica named UZY. Using machine-drived bass and samples, the band rips off Classic Rock standards (AC/DC, Motorhead) converted into electro-metal covers. Its first demo is favorably received by the national music press (Rage, Hard Rock Magazine, Longueurs d'Onde, Presto...) and indy media (Abus Dangereux, Kerosene, On A Faim...). On stage the band gives a finely crafted show combining a wall of sound with visual installations. The band fall into lethargy in 1999 when Maël begins a career as a drum teacher (he actually set up a band with Portobello Bones's Lionel).
Approached by Pascal (guitar), Richard gives head into a more fun project with also Stéphane Pietrucci (now Aïnu Records) ex Mana Murrayens's drummer (Metal/Hard Core).
This informal project between Stoner/punk is more a jam band than anything, experimenting sounds but not only... Without a name, without any set-list, without gigs, sparses rehearsals and too much distance between mambers, the project doesn't lead anywhere.
The will to find a way back on stage set many changes : Richard takes the bass position, and some ads are posted to find a new locally-situated drummer .
